Eli Tomac Back on Top of the Podium at San Diego Supercross

As the 250SX West Region prepares to enter a 9-week hiatus, Eli Tomac came through with a much-needed victory in San Diego, slowing down the momentum picked up by Ken Roczen over the last two weeks and tightening the points race just a bit.

When the gates dropped for the 250 Main Event, it was Rockstar Racing's Jason Anderson grabbing the holeshot, with Tomac and Martin Davalos close behind. Anderson went on to lead the first five laps of the race before Tomac ran him down and passed him in the corner before a yellow flag section of the track.

Two laps later, Roczen got around Anderson for 2nd, but by that point was trailing Tomac by 4.5 seconds. Roczen cut that lead down over time and was able to make a hard charge on the final lap when Tomac got held up a bit by lapped traffic. The Red Bull KTM rider fell just short as both riders crossed the finish line, but had the race lasted one more lap, we would have had quite a battle on our hands.

Anderson held on to 3rd to capture his best finish of the season.

Several riders had chances at a top 5 finish, but the race was full of missed opportunities. Davalos won his heat race and looked like a legit contender in the Main Event, but a crash in the rhythm section after the 2nd turn of the race sent him over the bars and out of contention.

Malcolm Stewart was holding down 4th place with 4 laps to go, but a crash knocked him to the back of the pack. Joey Savatgy inherited 5th place, but went off the track one lap later after making contact with Zach Osborne. Osborne then gave up 5th on the race's final lap after slipping off the bike.

When things were done shaking out, it was Austin Politelli earning a career-best 4th place finish, and heat winner Kyle Cunningham rounding out the top five.

The win was Tomac's 4th in 6 races this season, but he'll find himself trailing Roczen by 17 points when West Coast action resumes on April 20th.
