Chasing the Red Plate: Tight Battles Shaping Up Behind the Leaders

In our weekly feature, Chasing the Red Plate, we'll take a look at the various points scenarios heading into the next race. Refer to the chart for each class to see where certain hypothetical finishes would put each rider in the race for the championship.

James Stewart’s crash last week has changed the entire complexion of this title race. Ryan Dungey went from trailing by 14 points to now having a 35+ point lead on the trio of Jake Weimer, Mike Alessi and Stewart.

Dungey could have one disastrous moto and still keep a comfortable lead. All he’ll have to do is finish in the top 5 in one of the motos and he’s assured of holding onto the red plate.

Should Weimer, Alessi or Stewart (if he races) finish 1-1, they could take over the championship lead if Dungey finished 8-21 or 14-15.

The battle for 2nd is shaping up to be an exciting one, with Andrew Short also in the mix. Whoever finishes highest in the overall results at High Point has a good chance at situating themselves at the top of this group.

Blake Baggett didn’t take the overall at Thunder Valley, but he did add a few points on to his lead. To keep sole possession of the red plate for another week, Blake would just have to go 1-14, 2-8, 3-6, or 4-4.

These three - along with Tomac - have started to break away from the pack

Should Baggett fail to hit those scores, Justin Barcia could take over the points lead with a dominant afternoon, with Ken Roczen and Eli Tomac also in the running.

Barcia, Roczen and Tomac would all take over 2nd with a 1-1 sweep on the day.
